Is Your Motivation Wrong?
Why do you workout SO HARD? If you are honest with yourself, you will discover your motivation is wrong. Eve and I were working out the other day and I was telling her about the Georgia BullDawgs and their head coach Kirby Smart. Kirby says that the Dawgs are practicing to a standard, not for any particular team. Currently the Dawgs are ranked #1 in the nation and have been and will be double digit favorites in all of their games.
When you are that much better than everyone else how do you stay motivated? Well, I think Kirby Smart is on to something. He wants his team to practice to a high standard not determined by who they are playing but determined by their potential. He puts it another way: “We are not practicing to beat one team; we are practicing to beat them all!”
I told Eve that we should have that mind set when we are training. We should not be training to survive life. We should be training to THRIVE in life.
Because today's life is SO easy and if you let life dictate how hard you need to train you will not have to push yourself hard at all. As I have said SO MANY times before “Life has become so easy that strong, self-confident, healthy, mentally tough people are the exception to the norm.” In today’s society, besides what the doctor tells you about the internal health of your body what is your motivation to exercise? Let alone exercise vigorously? Well, I know what you are thinking and I am here to tell you, you’re wrong. As harsh as it may seem to say (let alone think) you are probably saying to yourself "I exercise SO vigorously because I want to look better, feel better, be stronger, and live longer than my peers." I know you think that should be the answer. BUT YOU’RE WRONG. Your peers are the low-level competition that Kirby Smart is warning you about. DO not train to outdo them. Train to your potential.
